Japan Pearl Exporters' Association
Approximately 100 years ago, Japan succeeded in cultivating Akoya pearls. Since that time, Akoya cultured pearls have been coveted, worn and loved by people of all ages not only in Japan but in countries throughout the world. Why is this? It is because Akoya cultured pearls have their own unique splendor. It is also the reason why we would like to promote anew these gems of the sea to pearl-loving people everywhere

| Business Profile (required 300-1000 characters): |
An Akoya cultured pearl is produced by inserting a nucleus (or nuclei) together with a tiny speck (or specks) of mantle tissue into the oyster (Pinctada fucata martensii). The main culturing areas in Japan are Mie, Ehime, Kumamoto,Oita and Nagasaki prefectures. Production amounts held steady for many years (approx. 70 tons), but recently these amounts have decreased due to abnormal weather conditions, new types of Red Tide and disease among the oysters.
